Assignments and Staffing
Frequently, nursing assignments and staffing decisions are driven primarily by organizational budgets referred to hours per patient day (HPPD). Unfortunately, low HPPDs may correlate to higher incidences of missed nursing care, burnout, and turnover. Current research indicates that healthcare organizations with higher levels of HPPDs realized lower incidences of hospital-related mortalities and failure to rescue (Domrose, 2010). Missing nursing care such as ambulation, oral care, turning of patients every 2 hours, and medication administration can have devastating effects on patients.
